The Persian Gulf War
It all started when Iraq invaded Kuwait because they had a small oil rich emirate on the Persian Gulf. Economic troubles in Iraq caused their current leader, Suddam Hussein, to invade Kuwait grounds in order to increase oil prices and strike it rich off of their precious resources. Also, Kuwait was part of the fertile crescent, so it's agriculture industry also blossomed, making its farms another target for Iraqi revolutionists. ( Iraq once owned Kuwait back in ancient times, so it would feel great to get it back. Their feelings towards Kuwait were similar to that of the Germans towards their losses in the First World War, causing their revolution.)

When Iraq invaded Kuwait, the United States got caught off-guard. Apparently, Hussein was part of a militia that ruled as a secret dictatorship. This group had a plan to use poison gas against all other religions in the area that were "inferior", such as Kurds, Iranians, and Shiite Muslims.
The United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union had previously sold Iraq an extensive arsenal that included tanks, missiles, and the equipment needed to produce nuclear and chemical weapons. After hearing of the drama in the Middle East, President Bush held a speech in which he dramatically declared Iraq's aggression would not stand. In the United Nations, the administration succeeded in persuading the Security Council to adopt a series of resolutions that condemned the Iraqi Invasion and demanded restoration of the government and economy of Kuwait (which imposed an economic blockade on Iraq).
